Essential Google XML Sitemaps Configurations for WordPress

You need to have a sitemap of your website to tell Google about the important pages. Use Google XML Sitemaps and let me show you how to configure it for maximum impact!

Install the plugin and let’s get started.

Configuring Google XML Sitemaps

The default settings of Google XML Sitemaps are pretty good. There are only a few things that you need to pay attention to.

First, under “Post Priority”, change the radio button to “Do not use automatic priority calculation”

Under “Sitemap Content”, check “Include homepage”, “Include posts”, and “Include the last modifications time.” Don’t use WordPress Pages (they’re useless), so don’t check “Include static pages.”

Now, go to the “Change frequencies” and “Priorities” sections at the bottom. Set all frequencies to “Always” and set all priorities to “1.0″. Let God, um, I mean Google sort them out!

That’s it! Just don’t forget to click “Update options”

I would also recommend that you give all the settings a second careful look to familiarize yourself with all the settings of Google XML Sitemaps and see if there’s anything else that you need to change.
